Build Back Better, Together

The protest movement for racial justice and the COVID-19 pandemic have brutally exposed systemic racism and institutional failures that inhibit the realization of a nation of liberty, prosperity, and justice for all, destroying any illusion of an equal opportunity nation.
The movement and the dastardly virus have revealed the lack of systemic investment required from national to local levels to make our people and institutions robust and resilient. This necessary state of resilience would create the intended outcome of our city value of compassion – a place that embraces human interdependence and the flourishing of human potential.
It is now our historic opportunity to seize this moment and embrace that only when Black Lives Matter will all of our city, our residents, and our environment be stronger than ever.

--Greg Fischer, Mayor

Even with a measured reopening process, COVID-19 case numbers and deaths in Louisville, the state, and the nation are still rising and continue to disproportionally impact Black and brown communities, making it premature to plan for a full reopening and economic recovery. As such, the Build Back Better, Together (BBBT) initiative is focus growing the city’s resiliency.

The BBBT focus area teams – arts and culture; built and natural environment; economy; education and talent development; health and safety; hospitality, sports and Bourbonism; and social infrastructure and impact – are prioritizing equity issues that must be addressed before, during, and after any eventual recovery to address economic and health impacts of COVID-19 and dismantle systemic racism. And as actions and policies are being developed and recommended, the teams will re-assess risks and re-evaluate vulnerabilities considering the swiftly changing circumstances of the economy, pandemic and calls for racial justice.

We seek to engage all Louisvillians in these efforts.
