The building currently occupied by Louisville Metro Archives and Records Center was constructed as a warehouse for the B.F. Avery & Sons Company in 1919. Evidence of the building's past, as a warehouse for the tractor manufacturing company, can still be seen throughout the structure and an adjacent building (also owned by Metro Government) which functioned as the company's print shop. Both buildings are now on the National Register of Historic Places. 

The Louisville Metro Archives storage facility has the shelf capacity to store approximately 36,000 cubic feet of boxed paper records. Approximately 32,000 cubic feet are currently in storage along with over 5,000 bound volumes of original records (including wills, deeds, marriages bonds/licenses, etc), over 5,000 maps, blueprints and drawings and over 4,000 rolls of microfilm. These items date from 1789 to the present.

The public is invited to visit our facility during regular business hours to use our reference materials and resources for research purposes. Please call 502-574-2554 to schedule an appointment. Our dedicated staff will be happy to help direct your search through the City of Louisville and Jefferson County records. We also hold more recent Metro Louisville records as well.

Students of local history often visit to review our historic Sanborn maps. The Sanborn map company was created in 1867 and within several decades became the largest and most successful American map company. Our collection dates from 1905. These maps facilitate the study of local sites, buildings and neighborhoods. Some of the earliest land records, division, plat and subdivision books are also housed at Metro Archives.

Besides historic records, we also handle current records management for a number of Metro government agencies and work with the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives to educate and support the employees of Metro Louisville with their daily records responsibilities and needs.
